Though clustered in and around the huge Asian peninsula south of China, the nations of Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia and Vietnam are varied in histories and are evolving into very different countries.

Thailand is Southeast Asia’s most diverse destination, popular with both local and overseas visitors- and with the spectacular resorts and restaurants to show for it.

Laos is a beautiful country offering travelers a unique glimpse of life gone by, like it’s profoundly Buddhist neighbour. Myanmar (Burma) was once part of Britain’s Indian empire. After a brief period of independence after WWII, a new socialist government closed the country’s borders and has only recently reopened them. Some travelers have concerns about the current political regime, but travel dollars mean work for Burmese people, and contact with visitors from abroad opens a window to the outside world.

Cambodia and Vietnam, both ex- French colonies, are countries marked by struggle but also shaped, defined and strengthened by it. Vietnam in particular has absorbed many outside influences and combined them into a unique national character. The results are delightful- Confucian morals, French- inspired architecture and cuisine, and a contemporary art tradition with echoes of Chagall and Picasso. Cambodia, while rising to meet the challenges of the 21st century, has also preserved its ancient treasures in stunning Angkor Wat and retained the gracious beauty of traditional folkways.
